keeping youth athletes safe

WEATHER GUIDELINES

It is important that each coach, player, and parent is mindful that we control what we can in situations of extreme temperatures. Player and family safety are paramount, if unsure, please discuss the situation with Managers or Club DOC's. Being a Midwest club, we deal with very hot humid weather to temperatures below freezing. Therefore we have designed the following guidelines to protect the AFC family in the best way we feel necessary. It is not possible at this time to have a professional trainer or medical equipment in the event of emergencies, so please read our updated guidelines below.

Temperature

  • HEAT: At temperatures or heat index of 95ºF & above, result in cancellation of all outdoor training sessions. This is for player and coach safety.
  • COLD: At temperatures or a wind chill of 30ºF & below, result in cancellation of all outdoor training sessions. This is for player and coach safety.

inclimate weather

  • SNOW & ICE: If roads are icy and/or snowy, to the point of unsafe travel, please cancel even if you are indoor. We do not want to put people at risk driving to and from practice in unsafe road conditions.
  • Lightning: Coaches and Managers should have the Weather Bug app on their phones. If ther is a chance of lightning, coaches should have their phone close during training to check the distance of the closest strike. Training sessions must be stopped for a strike within 12 miles of the location. A 20 minute delay is required for the last strike in that vicinity.
  • Tornado threat: Be sure to check radars and weather stations during the day. Discuss chances with Managers and DOC's. Canceling training sessions for a severe threat is better than people having to drive up during a dangerous storm.

A cancelled training session does not mean you can't be creative and get together in a safe place for team bonding, game review, zoom call, pizza, or something similar.
